    People generally hold positive stereotypes of physically attractive people and because of those stereotypes often treat them more favorably. However, we propose that some beliefs about attractive people, specifically, the perception that attractive individuals have a greater sense of entitlement than less attractive individuals, can result in negative treatment of attractive people. We examine this in the context of job selection and propose that for relatively less desirable jobs, attractive candidates will be discriminated against. We argue that the ascribed sense of entitlement to good outcomes leads to perceptions that attractive individuals are more likely to be dissatisfied working in relatively less desirable jobs. When selecting candidates for relatively less desirable jobs, decision makers try to ascertain whether a candidate would be satisfied in those jobs, and the stereotype of attractive individuals feeling entitled to good outcomes makes decision makers judge attractive candidates as more likely to be dissatisfied in relatively less (but not more) desirable jobs. Consequently, attractive candidates are discriminated against in the selection for relatively less desirable jobs. Four experiments found support for this theory. Our results suggest that different discriminatory processes operate when decision makers select among candidates for relatively less desirable jobs and that attractive people might be systematically discriminated against in a segment of the workforce

    Myrtle rust poses a significant biosecurity threat to Australia with potential for long-term damaging impacts on nativeflora and plant industries. This study describes the disease cycle of Austropuccinia psidii, the myrtle rust pathogen, in Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus obliqua, two commercially and ecologically important species from different sub-genera of Eucalyptus. Ontogeny and morphology of infection structures of A. psidii on plants of both Eucalyptus species with different rust response phenotypes, i.e. completely resistant, hypersensitive and highly susceptible, were investigated. Plants were inoculated with single-uredinium-derived urediniospores and examined by scanning electron microscopy. No differences between rust response phenotypes were observed in germination of urediniospores, formation of appressoria or length of germ tubes. The growth of germ tubes had no affinity towards stomata of either species. Histological observations indicated direct penetration by infection pegs through the leaf cuticle and no penetration beyond the epidermis on rust-resistant E. obliqua.Eucalyptus obliqua plants that were identified as susceptible to A. psidii at 3- and 6-months-old showed no disease when reinoculated with A. psidii at 12-months-old; this indicated possible early acquisition of adult plant resistance to A. psidii in this species. In the susceptible phenotype of E. globules rust inoculation led to rapid colonization of leaf parenchyma cells with the disease cycle completed within 10 days. These findings provide valuable insights into host–pathogen interactions in the Eucalyptus–A. psidii pathosystem,which might be useful for the development of effective rust control strategies across Eucalyptus subgenera

    Elsevier Science refused to publish a study of IBM workers that IBM sought to keep from public view. Occupational and environmental health (OEH) suffers from the absence of a level playing field on which science can thrive. Industry pays for a substantial portion of OEH research. Studies done by private consulting firms or academic institutions may be published if the results suit the sponsoring companies, or they may be censored. OEH journals often reflect the dominance of industry influence on research in the papers they publish, sometimes withdrawing or modifying papers in line with industry and advertising agendas. Although such practices are widely recognized, no fundamental change is supported by government and industry or by professional organizations

    Unethical for the sake of the group: Risk of social exclusion and pro-group unethical behavior

    This research tested the idea that the risk of exclusion from one’s group motivates group members to engage in unethical behaviors that secure better outcomes for the group (pro-group unethical behaviors). We theorized that this effect occurs because those at risk of exclusion seek to improve their inclusionary status by engaging in unethical behaviors that benefit the group; we tested this assumption by examining how the effect of exclusion risk on pro-group unethical behavior varies as a function of group members’ need for inclusion. A 2-wave field study conducted among a diverse sample of employees working in groups (Study 1) and a constructive replication using a laboratory experiment (Study 2) provided converging evidence for the theory. Study 1 found that perceived risk of exclusion from one’s workgroup predicted employees’ engagement in pro-group unethical behaviors, but only when employees have a high (not low) need for inclusion. In Study 2, compared to low risk of exclusion from a group, high risk of exclusion led to more pro-group (but not pro-self) unethical behaviors, but only for participants with a high (not low) need for inclusion. We discuss implications for theory and the management of unethical behaviors in organizations

    What happens if you single out? An experiment

    We present an experiment investigating the effects of singling out an individual on trust and trustworthiness. We find that (a) trustworthiness falls if there is a singled out subject; (b) non-singled out subjects discriminate against the singled out subject when they are not responsible of the distinct status of this person; (c) under a negative frame, the singled out subject returns significantly less; (d) under a positive frame, the singled out subject behaves bimodally, either selecting very low or very high return rates. Overall, singling out induces a negligible effect on trust but is potentially disruptive for trustworthiness
